Dublin has enlisted RBF/Urban Design Studios out of Southern California to consult with the city on a plan to improve downtown Dublin. Dublin has a strong commercial/retail center, but parts of it are old, tired, and out of date. There are several new stores, including the retail pad near Expo with the Chipolte and Panera Bread retail locations. It definitely lacks the "walking mall" type of feel that is so in vogue right now, and Dublin is looking for ways to jumpstart this process to make it's city core more of a destination. Stay tuned...
The Dublin Police announced that they will begin patroling the Hacienda Crossings shopping center on a new 3 wheeled scooter. The scooter, called the T3, will have a top speed of 25 MPH. There is no truth to the rumor that each scooter will have a bicycle bell and a horn attached. Hacienda Crossings, including the Regal Cinema complex, continues to see heavy traffic, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, which means the Dublin police are usually very visable at these times. Now they will be seen on scooters....
The City of Dublin has voted to draft an ordinance to ban superstores in the city. By a vote of 4 - 1, the city council has requested that the planning department draft an ordinance banning so called "superstores" with more than 175,000 sq ft of combined grocery/retail space. Currently, there are only 4 such parcels in the city that are properly zoned and large enough to accomodate a store of this size. The city of Livermore recently drafted a similar ordinance.
Ikea is out. After generating controversy and adding to fears of masive traffic jams, Ikea has decided not to build in Dublin after all. Blake Hunt Ventures, a retail developer, is proposing Emerald Place, a 305,000 sq ft "lifestyle" center with shopping, dining, and specialy retailers. It will feature almost 2 football fields of common pedestrial ares surrounded by shops, perhaps much like the River Walk shopping center in Palm Springs. They envision the center to be a place for adults to come and dine, shop, and just hang out.
